  Our Sustainability and Impact Approach

  Our vision is to be the world's trusted partner for delivering impactful events. We recognise that this impact extends far beyond our venue, to our people, businesses, suppliers and communities. Our Sustainability and Impact Strategy 2026-30 describes how we plan to build positive impact, while addressing negative outcomes that we may influence.

  This strategy is focused on three interconnected priorities:

  • environmental responsibility

  • social impact

  • economic prosperity

  Together, they represent our commitment to operate resilient, inclusive and future-focused venues that contribute positively to our local regions.

  Our Progress

  MCEC’s legacy of sustainability spans decades of continuous action. We are certified to 5- and 6-star Green Star building certifications, powered by 100% renewable electricity and have dedicated waste-sorting infrastructure, including an onsite organics dehydrator.

  Over the past two years, we have steadily improved accessibility features across MCEC by adding a Changing Places facility, upskilling our team through Hidden Sunflower Disability Training and offering free Sensory Bags through our community partner, Variety Australia.

  Beyond the features of our building, we continue to seek opportunities to invest in our region by supporting local suppliers, who make up most of our supply chain. We are also committed to growing our community partnership program, with our 2025-26 in-kind community contribution reaching $2.9 million.

  Reducing our environmental impact and strengthening our climate resilience

  MCEC relies heavily on the natural world to deliver impactful events and we acknowledge the considerable environmental outcomes we have.

  Our venue and events use large amounts of electricity, gas and water to operate. We also produce substantial amounts of waste each year, a lot of which is contributed by the events we house.

  Through this priority, we focus on climate and nature resilience, waste and circularity, and energy and water.

  Each year, we welcome millions of people through our doors and host an array of events as diverse as our visitors. Grounded in our value of Respect, it is important that we reflect this diversity in our workforce, our policies and our spaces.

  The events industry contributes $36 billion annually to the Australian economy. It enables people, businesses and industries to connect, share ideas and knowledge, and to build communities.

  The industry also brings challenges through labour practices, public safety and human rights. These challenges are present in how we operate our venue, the people we employ, the events we host and our key supply categories.
