Our roadmap

  This snapshot shows where the biggest impact can be made on our journey to net zero:

  • Total emissions: 35,632 tCO2-e:

    • Direct emissions (Scope 1: Sources we own and control): 11%

    • Indirect emissions (Scope 2: Electricity and utilities): 49%

    • Emissions up and down our value chain (Scope 3: Procurement, customers, clients and employee emissions): 40%

  Where our emissions come from:

  We're focused on tackling our biggest emissions sources, which include:

  • Electricity: 49% scope 2 and 5% scope 3

  • Food and catering: 21%

  • Natural gas: 10% scope 1 and 1% scope 3

  • Other purchased goods and services, including capital goods: 11%

  

• 2030 and 2025 targets

  Our 2030 and 2050 emissions targets are science-based (SBT-aligned) and independently validated.

  These targets are built on a deep analysis of our business as usual pathway, Melbourne Convention Exhibition Trust’s (MCET) long-term plans and expected growth across both venues, MCEC and Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre, opening in 2026.

• Our venues

  Our Net Zero Roadmap currently focuses on emissions from Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

  When Nyaal Banyul opens, we’ll establish new baselines for scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions to reflect its unique profile and reduction opportunities.

  While Nyaal Banyul will add to our total emissions, we remain committed to our 2030 and 2050 targets.

• Our partners

  As an early signatory to the global Net Zero Carbon Events Pledge, we’re committed to meeting the 2050 target and publishing our roadmap by the end of 2024.

  As a Victorian Government entity, we’re also committed to remaining aligned with State targets as far as possible, and we acknowledge that our own journey must be in partnership with the Victorian Government.

• Emission reduction opportunities

  We now have a list of potential pathways for emission reductions. Some opportunities require longer term consideration and investment, while for others we’re ready to hit the ground running or have already started.

  We’ve prioritised opportunities based on emissions reduction impacts; relative complexity and time required to implement and understand these may change with time.

  We’ll continue to investigate opportunities that require feasibility work with our asset partners in the Victorian Government and Plenary Group, as well as other key stakeholders and organisational partners.

  MCET operates in State-owned buildings under a Public Private Partnership. We recognise that any building-related emissions reductions will require collaboration with our asset partners and a long-term strategy aligned with the Victorian Government.
