What to Do in Melbourne This Winter

By Bree Pagliuso|

Coming to MCEC? Lucky you. Think of us as your launchpad to the best kind of Melbourne winter, the one with fire pits, late-night dumplings, surprise gallery visits and mineral springs under open skies. So, put your puffer on. We're heading out. Here’s how to do winter the right way:

First on Your List?

RISING. Melbourne’s moody after-dark festival takes over Southbank and the city with giant art, ambient soundscapes and performances that stop you in your tracks. It turns laneways, riverbanks and rooftops into a dreamscape—and you’re already in the perfect spot to join the trail.

Mid-June to early July. Mix of ticketed and free events.

Want to See the City Without Freezing for It?

Skyline Melbourne is just outside our doors. Hop into the Ferris wheel with heated gondolas for 360-degree views of Melbourne, right from South Wharf.

There’s mini golf too, plus hot choc, mulled wine and chocolate-dipped strawberries waiting at the base. All just steps from the venue.

Open daily from $15.

Just Outside Our Venue

Tucked away on South Wharf, is Billie’s Bites & Bar. It’s the perfect spot to refuel or unwind, with Yarra River views and a new winter menu made for getting cosy. Think Soup of the Day, Wagon Wheel Spiked Hot Choc and Billie’s Mulled Wine best enjoyed fireside.

Prices start from $10 for small bites.

Looking For a Winter Wonderland?

Head over to our sister neighbourhood, Docklands. When the season hits, the lights come on, the rink opens up, and Docklands turns into the cosiest spot in the city.

Think snow play, fire pits, fairy lights and that crisp winter buzz that makes you want to linger. It’s easy to get there, with plenty of tram options on your doorstep.

Weekends throughout winter. From $20.

Some Things Just Hit Better in Winter

Like slow-cooked roasts, crispy potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and gravy you could drink. Builders Arms Hotel in Fitzroy does it properly. Grab a spot by the fireplace and settle in.

It’s owned by Melbourne favourite Andrew McConnell, so you know it’s going to be good.

There’s always something on, like Monday Steak Night and Tuesday Chicken Night.

Where to Eat

To ask for Melbourne’s best food spots is like asking someone for their favourite movie; impossible to choose just one. This city is a foodie paradise, so consider this a warm and fuzzy starting point and all within easy reach.

Rising Sun Hotel, South Melbourne   An old-school pub with open fires, cold beer and hearty meals. Nothing fancy, just excellent.

Agathé Pâtisserie, South Melbourne Market   Their almond croissant is the answer to everything.

Mensho Tokyo, CBD   Next-level ramen from a cult Tokyo favourite. Rich broth, handmade noodles and open late.

Tipo 00, CBD   A bowl of tagliolini here can change the course of your day.

For Our Final Winter Pick

This one takes a bit of planning, but it’s worth every minute. Alba Thermal Springs & Spa, Mornington Peninsula.  Need a proper reset? This is it. Steam rising through the trees, open-air pools, and enough calm to make your to-do list disappear. It’s a short drive from Melbourne, but feels like another world.
