Curious Melbourne: A Front Row Glimpse into Melbourne’s Fashion Future
By Bree Pagliuso|
Known for our coffee culture, eclectic art, and commitment to individuality, Melbourne is a city where style speaks boldly and innovation is celebrated. And part of that vibrant culture is the next generation of Australian fashion, led by Melbourne's brightest design students, pushing boundaries and rewriting the rules of style.
This year, these trailblazing students transformed THE LUME Melbourne into a runway like no other—a striking collision of art, fashion, and unbridled vision for Melbourne Fashion Week ’s Student Collections.
With its ever-changing layouts and digital projections, THE LUME Melbourne offered a fresh canvas for the young designers, allowing their work to be displayed in a setting that felt as dynamic and expressive as their creations.
From the figure-eight runway that encouraged intimate viewing to the futuristic digital art projections that enhanced each garment, every detail contributed to an experience unlike any other.
So, Why THE LUME Melbourne?
The choice was simple, as Courtney Jorgensen, MCEC Manager of Corporate & Entertainment, explained, “With its distinctive appeal and capacity to host up to 900 guests, THE LUME Melbourne created an inclusive atmosphere where friends, family, and fashion lovers could unite to support the future of Australian fashion. After the success of the Ganbu Marra Runway in 2023, returning to THE LUME was a natural choice. It’s a venue that continues to allow Melbourne’s creatives to thrive and express themselves.”
Behind the Scenes of the Runway
This year’s setup was meticulously designed to accommodate Melbourne’s fashion-forward crowd. The layout took a bold turn with the removal of past installations, making way for a figure-eight runway that maximised visibility. Guests seated in the centre enjoyed an uninterrupted view of the designs, creating an immersive and intimate experience.
Rhiannon Anthonis, MCEC Event Planner, worked closely with the City of Melbourne to bring the vision to life. Reflecting on the event’s success, Rhiannon shared, “Though the focus was on supporting the student’s creative expression, every element—from cocktail setups to the arrangement of VIP lounges—was carefully planned to make the audience feel part of the runway’s energy. This collaboration, built on detailed planning and a shared commitment to the students’ vision, made the event resonate deeply with both guests and designers.”
1 Minute with Melbourne’s Rising Designer: Xinglai Chen
We spoke with Xinglai Chen, an RMIT student designer and finalist whose collection stole the spotlight on the runway.
What inspired your collection?
My collection is a love letter to myself, inspired by growing up as a third-generation culture kid. It reflects how I dress, experience the world, and constantly reinvent myself. It’s about the tension between trying to fit in and the rebellious urge to deconstruct those opposing forces—like neglect and nurture—and translating that into a fashion context.
Do you have a favourite piece?
It’s hard to pick a favourite because they’re all my babies! The collection plays with tailoring techniques using unconventional materials like wool and jersey, creating a ‘trapped’ effect by draping the body. There are two fully tailored looks and a gown because, of course, you need a gown for the runway.
How does Melbourne influence your work?
Melbourne has shaped the way I view the world. I always say I was brought up in China but grew up here. The people and culture of this city have solidified my worldview and influenced my designs, which are like an autobiography about me. Melbourne’s local fashion crowd welcomed me with such warmth—it’s a community where we’re honest with each other and push each other to improve. That support has made me the designer I am today.
What inspires you about this city?
The local fashion community here is unlike any other. Sure, we might have a bit of a ‘resting bitch face,’ but underneath that, there’s a deep sense of support and camaraderie. My friends keep me grounded—they’re honest and push me to do better. It’s a community where creativity thrives because we all want to see each other succeed.
How did THE LUME Melbourne as a venue add to your show?
THE LUME Melbourne is such an impressive art space—it’s not just a venue; it’s an experience. Having my work associated with the idea of art feels incredible. It elevates everything and makes the show feel larger than life. The digital projections and immersive atmosphere brought a completely unique energy to the runway.
What was it like seeing your designs on the runway?
It was surreal. Seeing my muses walk for me in such a dynamic space alongside incredibly talented designers was a full-circle moment. I couldn’t believe it was all happening. THE LUME made everything feel like a blend of high fashion and fine art—it was a moment I’ll never forget.
Any advice for aspiring designers?
Just go for it! Work hard and stay dedicated—there’s no shortcut to success. Spend time mastering your craft, get to the studio early, stay late, and surround yourself with people who challenge you and support you. Building strong relationships is just as important as perfecting your designs.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I hope to be working overseas, maybe for a major house like Jean Paul Gaultier or Dries Van Noten. Then, eventually, I’d like to come back and start my own label.
