What Do Gen Z Want From Their Events?
By Bree Pagliuso|
Gen Z craves real connection. Here’s what that means for the future of live events and why it matters for your next one at MCEC. We’ve all made the same assumption: Gen Z lives online. Born into a world of high-speed internet, smartphones, and social media, they’re digital natives, always on, always scrolling.
But a new report from global event leaders Freeman has delivered a timely reality check, and it might just reshape how we think about engaging the next generation.
What they’re actually craving is in-person connection. Real conversations. Tangible moments. In Real Life.
For us, this confirms what we’re already seeing on the ground. As the next wave of professionals enters the workforce, they’re not shying away from live events. They’re leaning in. And they’re looking to learn, connect and grow.
Let’s dig into what Freeman’s 2025 Gen Z Report tells us, and how we can design events that meet this generation where they really are.
Tech-Savvy, But Not Tech-Obsessed
There’s no doubt Gen Z is fluent in tech. They’ve studied online, launched side hustles via apps, and built friendships in group chats and comment sections. But that same tech fluency has come at a cost. Freeman’s report reveals a big shift in sentiment.
91% of Gen Z say technology has made them feel less connected and more isolated from others in their company or industry.
Half of Gen Zers wish platforms like TikTok and X didn’t exist at all. This isn’t a cry for less digital. It’s a call for balance. Gen Z isn’t asking for a tech-free world, they’re asking for human connection to come first.
We see this as a design opportunity. Live events shouldn’t ditch tech. Instead, they should integrate it in ways that deepen engagement, not replace it. Think interactive apps that spark conversations, content that continues post-event, and spaces that prioritise human energy.
They’re Looking for Belonging, Not Just Information
This generation isn’t just showing up to take notes. They’re showing up to belong. And that changes everything.
According to the report:
86% of Gen Zers say attending in-person events is a key part of their career development
84% say live events are the best setting for building strong business relationships
89% say the relationships formed at events are critical to building their professional confidence
That’s not just attendance.
That’s investment.
Gen Z is actively seeking out spaces where they can grow their careers, meet people, and build skills that no webinar can teach.
The Message is Clear
If you’re hosting an event at MCEC, there’s a real opportunity to shape the careers of a new generation. And they’re ready for it. Confidence starts in the room. One of the report’s most compelling insights is just how much Gen Z is craving confidence, but unsure of how to build it.
Only 42% feel confident making small talk in professional settings
Just 39% feel comfortable networking with others in their industry
And when it comes to presenting or leading meetings, Gen Z trails behind their Millennial and Gen X counterparts by 10 to 15%
They’re eager but uncertain. The good news is that they see live events as the solution.
That means events need to go beyond keynote stages and breakout rooms. They need to be designed with confidence-building in mind. Icebreakers, informal meetups, interactive workshops and opportunities for younger attendees to speak up all help. Our versatile spaces make it easy to create those moments, from intimate roundtables to dynamic skills labs.
It’s Not Just Gen Z
Here’s something else Freeman uncovered. Gen Z’s desire for connection isn’t that different from their older peers.
Millennials and Gen X also value in-person interaction. Like Gen Z, they’re feeling the effects of digital fatigue. Designing events that prioritise real-world connection doesn’t just speak to younger audiences. It creates stronger, more engaging experiences for everyone in the room.
At MCEC, we see it every day. Events that mix keynotes with hands-on breakout sessions. Networking formats that encourage genuine conversations across generations. Interactive technology that brings people together instead of creating more screens to look at.
Because here, it’s about more than just the content.
It’s the energy between sessions, the unexpected chats, the space to reflect and respond. Build that in, and your event won’t just reach Gen Z—it’ll resonate with every attendee.
6 Ways to Design Events Gen Z Will Show Up For
So, what does this all mean for your next event? Here are six practical takeaways from the Freeman report and how they come to life in our venue:
Personalise the experience
Start before the doors open. Use pre-event surveys to understand Gen Z’s interests and build sessions, speaker content and networking opportunities around what really matters to them.
Create peer-led moments
From Gen Z meetups to young professional panels, give this audience ownership. Let them lead conversations, not just listen in.
Mix structured and social
Balance formal sessions with informal moments. Think speed networking, quiet connection zones, and post-panel drinks that feel more like a community gathering than a conference.
Design for confidence
Build in opportunities for Gen Z to practice their soft skills. Workshops, Q&As, small group activities and public speaking support all go a long way.
Use tech with intention
Tech should support the moment, not distract from it. Consider real-time feedback tools, discovery apps or gamified elements that help Gen Z connect with others.
Invest in them
Gen Z notices where companies put their energy. 86% want their employers to spend more on live events that support career growth. The message? Events aren’t just a perk. They’re a path forward.
The Future of Events Is Already Here
By 2030, Gen Z will make up 30% of the workforce. But they’re not waiting to be invited into the room. They’re ready to show up now.
We’re proud to be the kind of place where they feel welcome, heard and inspired. Whether you’re planning a national conference, a professional development day or a fresh take on the traditional summit, we’re here to help you build events that matter.
